Sierra Club Emblem
John Muir was a Scottish-American writer and the founder of the Sierra Club. He played an important role in advocating for environmentalism, specifically land use. He wrote books and articles that ultimately swayed the government’s and many Americans’ opinions. In the late 1800s, Muir helped to establish three state parks before the turn of the century (Yosemite, Sequoia, and Mount Rainier). Although not of public importance yet, it was Muir who headed the push for environmental legislative action. The Sierra Club, established in 1892, still supports government acts in environmental protection today.
