IMMIGRATION
Immigration. A word that means something to everyone. 1st generation, 5th generation, or 21st generation, Americans come from all over the world. It’s something that makes the United States of America so different from other countries and keeps our nation united, but also divided. This exhibit discusses everything one needs to know about immigration in the US, from the simple basics and fast facts, to the history, to the current politics between Republicans and Democrats.
The definition of “immigration” envelops many different centuries, cultures, and people with significant contrasting qualities. People have been migrating and traveling to different countries for thousands of years, and certain time periods have consisted of large scale migrations while others have small levels of immigration, and makes the travel patterns and time periods interesting to compare and contrast.
Immigration and restriction in this country today have changed significantly since the early days of America, and the laws and stances continue to evolve each day. Despite all of the past restrictions that were put in place but eventually repealed, new restrictions and enforcements on border control are still made and affect immigrants coming to America.
Politics are found everywhere, making up the structure of all of the countries in the world. In United States’ politics, immigration is a controversial topic, one that many citizens find themselves passionate about. The U.S. considers itself a nation of immigrants, therefore, this exhibit shows the different beliefs of each political party in the U.S. on immigration policies. It also displays two different types of political commentary and news sources.
Immigration policies affect both immigrants and Americans. In this exhibit, one may discover how the U.S. became such a diverse nation, made of all types of ethnicities and nationalities. There is also a story of how current immigration policies affected an American citizen and his family emotionally, providing a real account of something that happens to more than just immigrants in the U.S..
