American society has gone through a long and continuing education on the needs and rights of the LGBTQ+ community throughout the past century. At the beginning of the 20th century, America was still silent towards the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Those who identified as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer were forced to stay in the metaphorical closet due to antiquated sentiments. Laws based on puritanical society still dominated the conduct of these individuals. In some aspects of society, their presence went unacknowledged. No one wanted to talk about these unseemly people and their actions. It just wasn’t done.
As the 1960s boiled over into the 70s, the American way of life was undergoing a complete overhaul. Amongst the social turmoil, the LGBTQ+ community found their voice. Those who came out during this time became the champions to pave the way for future generations. They shouted from the streets in parades and marches until their voices were heard. When AIDS became the topic of conversation, reactions were polarized. The gay community had become dirty again with its disease. But advocates helped to steer the conversation towards the importance of being oneself.
When day dawned on the 21st century, they pushed the conversation further. Laws finally started to recognize this community and its rights, or lack thereof. Old statutes came crashing down through the courts and even Disney Channel has accepted the children of the LGBTQ+ community. But as with every great change, the pendulum must swing both ways. With every new champion working to better the world for this marginalized community, some other realm sees a setback.
However, do not be discouraged. The dialogue will continue. And it starts with you, starting here and learning about the conversation of which you are about to become.
