We need to understand there is no one formula for how women should lead our lives. That is why we must respect the choices that each woman makes for herself and her family. Every woman deserves the chance to realize her own God-given potential. But we must recognize that women will never gain full dignity until their human rights are respected and protected.
I Am Malala
Malala Yousafzai, a famous feminist and women's rights activist, has contributed to the conversation on third-world countries' struggles for women's rights. The story of the girl who stood up to the Taliban and survived a headshot only to go on as a motivational speaker and advocate for women and peace and the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The teenage girl appeals to young radical minds with themes of the limitless power of girls. Her story is unique because of the influence she held at such a young age. Because of this many of her audience members are young girls, whom she appeals to with accessible language and hopeful messages despite the bleak setting Taliban infested Pakistan where men were seeking to rob her of her education. A cause she has declared devotion to for the rest of her life.
I don't want to be thought of as the "girl who was shot by the Taliban" but the "girl who fought for education." This is the cause to which I want to devote my life.
“There are two powers in the world; one is the sword and the other is the pen. There is a third power stronger than both, that of women.” |
If one man can destroy everything, why can't one girl change it? |
We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced. |
In Pakistan when women say they want independence, people think this means we don’t want to obey our fathers, brothers or husbands. But it does not mean that. It means we want to make decisions for ourselves. We want to be free to go to school or to go to work. Nowhere is it written in the Quran that a woman should be dependent on a man. The word has not come down from the heavens to tell us that every woman should listen to a man.
