By definition (Planned Parenthood): Gender Roles are the ways in which we are expected to act, dress, speak, groom, and conduct ourselves based on our assigned gender. The expectations from a woman include "being polite, accommodating, and nurturing." From a man they are "being strong, aggressive, and bold."
Different walks of life have different expectations for each sex and they can vary from group to group. Stereotypes about gender can cause unequal and unfair treatment because of a person's gender, or sexism.
There are 4 different types of gender stereotypes:
1) Personality traits: women as emotional and men as aggressive
2) Domestic behaviors: women as the care takers and men as the money makers
3) Occupations: women as nurses and teachers and men as doctors and engineers
4) Physical appearance: women as thin and graceful and men as tall and muscular
These are commonly accepted ideals but are absolutely not the way in which everyone feels.
Feminists are trying to defy these stereotypes and make it okay to act in whichever way you please, gender aside.
Today, we are normalizing women in the workplace who are strong and independent. We are also normalizing men who are emotional and are able to cook and clean. None of these traits should be assigned to one gender or the other but rather you should decide the way you would like to live your life based on your own wants and needs based on your individuality and not your gender.

Above are three artifacts from Anita Corben's "First Women" project that began in 2008 and would last for ten more years. She sought to find and photograph women who were their first in their field to accomplish something. Above from left to right are the the first women to be Attorney General, Lord Speaker, and A Law Lord. Corben emphasizes capability and accomplishment in women and fuels feminism by showing all that empowered women can accomplish. She also challenges gender roles by showcasing women in positions that have only ever been held by men in previous times.
Dame Rebecca West
Rebecca West often claimed oblivion to her apparent support of feminism. She said voiced radical ideas about the roles of men and women. During West’s lifetime, her novels attracted much less attention than did her social and cultural writings, but, at the end of the 20th century, feminist critics argued persuasively that her fiction was formally as inventive as that of her female modernist contemporaries.
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat. |
The main difference between men and women is that men are lunatics and women are idiots. |
The trouble about man is twofold. He cannot learn truths which are too complicated; he forgets truths which are too simple. |

There is, of course, no reason for the existence of the male sex except that sometimes one needs help with moving the piano.
