Statue of Liberty With the Cross (2006)In Memphis, Tennessee, a statue was erected in 2006. It's the Statue of Liberty with a Christian cross. On the bottom of the statue are the words: "America Return to Christ." It was sculpted by Ryan Bessant. When the statue was unveiled, protest immediately rose. Many believed that Bessant was disrespecting an American symbol. The sculptor responded by saying that "America belongs to God". In southern states, there are many who believe that church and state should work together. They are able to build monuments and sculptures that convey ideologies. This belief of an integration of church and state is clearly still relevant for many Americans in the early 2000's.
