Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement contributed to the integration of nationalities in Media. In the mid 1900s, controversy broke out over successful black musicians and news reporters exposing the inhumane way of thinking that had swept the country. People either love it or hated it and as time has progressed, there remain many questions and concerns about the diversity in media industries. The May 2017 Vogue cover sparked numerous debates about the poor display of diversity, especially in the modeling world. People expressing concerns of the weak representation of other races has led the television industry to create more diverse casts in shows and movies, almost overcorrecting and making every show or episode vastly diverse.
Rock 'n' Racisim
Rock 'n' Roll became very popular in the 50's and introduced African-Americans into the media of music. Their songs became popular, which angered those enveloped in racism. Some believed the need to put down their creations and not play their music on radio stations.
White Kids Discover Black Music
In the 1950s music in the media was a huge market amongst young people. However, there was a lot of controversy when white teenagers started to buy black records as shown in the video above. People thought that this brought along a new wave of music along with a new way of thinking.
Television Exposes Racism in Little Rock
This clip shows how the advances of television affected how news reached the people and eventually exposes the racism in their communities. People believed that this new technology had a major impact on people being more knowledgeable about what was going on.
Big Brands Lack of Diversity
The Victoria's Secret Fashion is a huge media event for the program to advertise their new products to consumers. They have been getting bashed on social media for their lack of diversity in the show.
