Throughout history, medicine has evolved. Huge scientific advancements improved the quality of life for many people, especially children. Dr. Hoff was celebrated as a local hero for his work creating medicines that successfully treated most common coughs and also treated more serious and deadly conditions such as pneumonia, pleurisy, and consumption. People no longer died at such young ages from these curable diseases and life spans lengthened thanks to his work.

Before our current advancements in medicine were discovered, many people were scared of illnesses they didn't understand such as mental illnesses. They would create ways of healing that seem crazy to us now like this chair that would bombard a mentally ill patient with noises to try and fix their brain. Most believed in these treatments and relied on them, but there were a few who saw that they could create negative consequences or not help the healing process. Those who were against the treatments were often ignored because the treatments were the only hope at the time.

This picture depicts a medical technique developed in the 18th century called mesmerism, which supposedly focused on a body's natural magnetic field and manipulated it in order to cure disease. Many well-educated men at the time saw this as a crazy solution, but a large portion of the common people believed in it. Nowadays most view this as an absurd creation that isn't based in fact, but some still believe and argue its realistic nature because mesmerism is known to be the beginnings of modern hypnosis.
